Start with the largest levers
A sustainable plan may focus on limiting heavy alcohol intake, sugar-sweetened drinks, and frequent large portions of high-purine animal foods while emphasizing water to thirst, vegetables, whole grains, and appropriate portions.
Do not turn food into blame
Gout is influenced by genetics, kidney handling of urate, medicines, health conditions, body weight, and diet. A flare is not proof that someone failed. Severe restriction often makes a plan harder to sustain.
Lifestyle changes and medical treatment
People with recurrent flares, tophi, kidney disease, kidney stones, or joint damage may need clinician-directed urate-lowering therapy. Discuss weight change, alcohol use, fasting, supplements, and special diets with the treating clinician.
